Every Game Matters for the Generals

The Eugene Generals (25-11) will host the Tri-City Titans (19-18) this Friday and Saturday at Lane Events Center-Ice. The last time these two teams met was a battle to the end, and it appears that these two games will be also. “We expect them to be gunning for us,” Generals Head Coach Robert Freeland stated. “They have arguably the best goalie in the league, and he gave his team a chance to sweep the weekend.”

The goalie that Coach Freeland was referring to is Tim Potter. Potter boasts the highest save percentage in the league (.930), and has the fourth highest goals against average (3.18). Potter also represented the NOR-PAC in the 2006 National Junior B Showcase where he won all three games he started, the only goalie at the tournament to do so. In the only two games he started against the Generals he had a .958 save percentage, facing 120 shots and only allowing 5 goals. The Generals did manage to pull out a win on Sunday in a 4-3 overtime game, but they had to pepper Potter with 65 shots to get the job done. The Generals will have to put up those kinds of numbers to beat Tri-City this weekend.

This is a daunting task, considering the Generals are now in second place in the NOR-PAC Western Division for the first time all season, and they need to win as many games as possible to ensure the best playoff position. The Titans goalie is not the only goalie showcased in these games, however. Generals goalie Brent Seidel has been very hot as of late, and has put up some staggering numbers in his last three games. Seidel, in his last three games, has had an impressive .955 save percentage, and put up a 1.33 goals against average. With those numbers, Seidel could be seeing a considerable change, for the better, in his playing time. The goaltending surge from Seidel couldn’t have come at a better time for the Generals as the playoffs are approaching and every game matters.
