Generals Streak Ends at Ten

Mountlake Terrace, WA – The Eugene Generals (10-4) franchise record of ten wins in a row ended tonight after a 8-3 defeat at the hands of the first place Seattle Totems (13-1). The Generals gave up five goals in the first period, and the Totems were able to chase Generals goaltender Dylan Woodring out of the net for the first time this season after only twenty minutes.

“We have to play our best hockey to compete with the top teams in this league, and we came nowhere close to that tonight,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly said. “We did win ten games in a row, but I think tonight’s game showed us that we have a lot further to go if we want meet all of our goals for this season.”

The Generals will have a lot to work on if they want to contend for the league championship, and one of those areas is special teams. The Generals allowed one powerplay goal, and two shorthanded goals on the night. The Generals also failed to score on eleven powerplay opportunities. The Generals looked pressured all night when given a man advantage, and they failed to use the Olympic size ice to their advantage. On the reverse end, the Totems were able to move the puck with ease when on the powerplay, and played very aggressive when on the penalty kill. The Generals will have to make the Totems pay for that aggressive play tomorrow if they want to walk away with two points on the weekend.

The two bright spots for the Generals were third year forward Michael Frei, and rookie goaltender Kevin Aslett. Frei was able to put two pucks in the net to give him three goals on the season. Frei has been looking for a breakout performance, and this might have been that game even though it was a loss. Kevin Aslett was able to stop the bleeding, and only allow three goals in two period of work. Aslett stopped 24 of the Totems 27 shots in the second and third period.

The Generals will be looking to show the Totems that the blowout tonight was a fluke when they meet tomorrow at 8:00 PM at Olympicview Ice Arena. The game will be broadcast on GiTV. For more information on upcoming games or GiTV please visit eugenegenerals.com.
