Woodring, Elkins and Mills Shine against the Tomahawks
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals (6-3) won their sixth game in a row tonight at Lane Events Center-Ice against the Puget Sound Tomahawks. Dylan Woodring earned his first shutout of the season, and Brendan Elkins had a hat trick in the Generals 7-0 victory. The Generals had a few lapses, but were able to come as close to playing a full sixty minutes of hockey as they have all season. The win vaults the Generals to third in the NORPAC Pacific Division standings.
“The big difference I saw today is that we didn’t sit back and wait for opportunities,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly stated. “We controlled the game from the start, and we continued to take it to them the entire game.”
After starting 0-3, the Generals have picked up their intensity, and have come away with two points in all six contests. Dylan Woodring has continued to show he is in mid-season form as he has picked up five wins in his last five starts. Woodring was able to completely shut the door on every one of the Tomahawks 26 shots tonight, and made several spectacular saves to ensure the third shutout of his Generals career. Woodring now has a .932 SV%, which is 2.3% higher than his closest competitor.
The Generals scored in bunches tonight, and Brendan Elkins was able to have his breakout game. Elkins crashed the net hard all game long, earning three goals in the process. Kyle Mills assisted Elkins on every one of his goals, and added another assist and a goal for five points on the night. Generals Assistant Captain Steven Slattery and Generals Captain Justin Adams each had two assists in the win, and Clayton Lewis produced one goal and two assists. John Strahle was also able to score his first goal as a member of the Generals.
The surprise of the night was the Generals powerplay unit. The Generals put up three goals on eight powerplay opportunities, and were able to raise their powerplay percentage by more than two percent (13.16%) on the season. The Generals success tonight could be the boost that they need to extend their streak. The Generals only trail the league leading Seattle Totems by four points, and the second place Tri-City Titans by two points. The Generals will have to get past single games against the Rogue Valley Wranglers and the Coeur d’Alene Lakers to try to redeem their last loss of the season against the Titans, but the Generals can’t get caught looking past the 0-8 Lakers and the 0-6 Wranglers if they want to head into the match-up against the Titans with an eight game winning streak.
The Generals game against the Rogue Valley Wranglers this Monday at 7:00 PM at the RRRink in Medford, OR will be broadcast in audio only. For more information on upcoming games or GiTV please visit eugenegenerals.com.
