Generals Extend Streak against Puget Sound
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals (5-3) extended their winning streak to five tonight when they defeated the Puget Sound Tomahawks (1-4) 3-1 tonight at Lane Events Center-Ice. The Generals and the Tomahawks battled for three straight periods, but the Generals were able to maintain control for the majority of game and pick up two valuable points. The win against Puget Sound gives the Generals their first victory against a team with a win this season, and adds to their league leading winning streak.
“I’m happy with the outcome, and fairly pleased with how we arrived at the outcome,” Generals Head Coach Chris Hartly stated. “I still see a lot of things we can do better, but at least we’re able to get some wins while we’re improving.”
The Generals, who averaged 39 shots against in their first seven games, held the Tomahawks to 23 shots. The Generals were also able to hold the Tomahawks to a 4% shooting. Before tonight’s game the Tomahawks averaged a goal on a league leading 14% of their shots. Generals goaltender Dylan Woodring played a big part in their low shot percentage, as he continued to dominate in net. Woodring is now 4-0 in his last four starts, and increased his league leading save percentage by .004 to .924 tonight.
All the scoring for the Generals came from defensemen. The Generals started the scoring 4:12 into the first period when Steven Slattery and Justin Adams assisted Brian Kneaper for a one-timer from the point. That was all the scoring for the first period as both teams were trying to feel each other out in their first meeting of the 2007-08 NORPAC Regular Season.
The Generals were able to get on the board for the second time of the night with a little over two minutes to play in the second. John Strahle fed a pass to Kyle Mills as he sneaked in front of the net for an easy power play goal. That would be the Generals only power play goal in twelve opportunities on the night. The Generals would have won the second period for the first time this season, but the Tomahawks were able to net a five on three power play goal with one second left.
Kyle Mills earned the Big Town Hero of the night with 3:10 left in the third period when he scored his second goal of the night after a beautiful pass from Clayton Lewis. Mills’ goal sealed the game for the Generals, and they were able to fight off the last minute charge from the Tomahawks. Mills is now tied for second in NORPAC for points among defensemen (7).
The Generals will host the Puget Sound Tomahawks tomorrow night at 7:35 PM at Lane Events Center-Ice, and will try to extend their winning streak. The Generals will also face the Rogue Valley Wranglers at the RRRink in Medford, OR on Monday at 7:00 PM. Both games will be broadcast on GiTV.
