Generals Beat Puget Sound, Split with River City

Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals (33-10) defeated the Puget Sound Tomahawks (13-30) 5-1 on Thursday night, which was the Generals ninth victory in nine games against the Tomahawks this season. The Generals fell to the River City Jaguars (12-31) 5-4 in OT on Saturday night, but they were able to rebound with a 7-0 win over the Jaguars on Saturday. The Generals beat the Jaguars 8-1 in the nine game season series.

“We played one great period of hockey on Thursday and Friday, but we were finally able to put it together on Saturday,” Generals head coach Jay Miller stated. “Saturday was probably our most complete game of hockey this season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. We have five games left before playoffs, and two of those games will be against our first round opponent. We have to take this time to prepare so that we can come out firing when they roll around.”

There was no scoring in the first period on Thursday night, but the Generals would get the first goal of the game 55 seconds into the first period when Ryan McDonald set up Christian Merritt. The Tomahawks would get one in the second, and the two teams would head into the third with a 1-1 tie.

Justin Huelsman would get the game winner 3:20 into the frame, and Kyle Kennedy would get the assist. Just 1:24 later Blake Bishop and Sean Park assisted Peter Mingus to give the Generals a two goal lead. The Generals would get a three goal lead when Theo Campe and Ryan McDonald assisted Bread Main 13:26 into the third. Campe would end his successful debut with the Generals with a goal at 18:56 of the period. Ryan McDonald and Christian Merritt would get the assist. Jr. Generals goaltender Sam Alperin would also make his Junior debut in net. He played 1:04 and made one save.

The Generals would fall for the first time of the season to the River City Jaguars on Friday. The loss was the Generals second OT loss of the season. Ryan McDonald and Theo Campe led the Generals with three points a piece. McDonald netted his second hat trick of the season, and Camp had his first playmaker with the Generals. Christian Merritt had two assists for the Generals, and Brad Main scored the only other goal for Eugene. Ray Frianeza and Sean Park each had an assist in the game.

The Generals were able to rebound on Saturday night with a big 7-0 win. The shutout gave Generals goaltender Dylan Woodring his fourth of the season, which is a new Generals franchise record. The Generals would score five power play goals in the contest. Eric Watters led the Generals with a goal and three assists. Brad Main and Blake Bishop each had two goals and an assist. Ryan McDonald had a goal and an assist, and Theo Campe had two assists. Sean Park scored a goal, and Arram Chinarian, Christian Merritt and Peter Mingus each had an assist.

The Generals will conclude their sixth three game weekend in a row this weekend when they face the Rogue Valley Wranglers on Thursday, and they host the Tri-City Titans on Friday and Saturday. The game against Rogue Valley on Thursday in Medford, OR at 7:00 PM will be broadcast on EGHN in audio only. The game on Friday at 7:35 PM and the game on Saturday at Lane Events Center-Ice at 4:35 PM against the Titans will be broadcast on EGHN.
