Generals Split with Puget Sound
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals (4-2) split two games in Bremerton, WA last Thursday and Friday with the Puget Sound Tomahawks (3-5). The Generals were able to come away with the 3-2 victory in the Thursday contest, but fell short 3-4 on Friday.
“We didn’t play great hockey for a sustained period of time at any point this weekend,” Generals Head Coach Jay Miller said. “Puget Sound is a very talented team, and we have to stick to our systems and play with 100% effort if we want to win against the Tomahawks. I think we can come away with some valuable lessons from this weekend, and hopefully we’ll be able to apply them to Tri-City next weekend.”
No player for the Generals had more than one point on Thursday. Puget Sound was able to get on the board first, but Ryan McDonald started the scoring for the Generals with an unassisted goal 12:58 into the first period. Carl Lehtola would assist Neil Holder 15:39 into the first to give the Generals a 2-1 lead.
No scoring occurred in the second period, but the Generals would get the eventual game winner from RJ Cigile, assisted by Michael Frei and Ben Charlson, 13:43 into the third period. Puget Sound would get within one under a minute later, but could not tie the game in the final minutes. Nolan Ohmart got the win saving 17 of the 19 shots on net, and Taylor Fant got the loss saving 43 of the 46 shots on net.
The game on Friday was a completely different game. The Tomahawks got out to a 3-0 lead, and the Generals couldn’t put the puck past Taylor Fant until 16:40 into the second period when Joe Myers and Michael Frei assisted Blake Bishop on the power play. Myers and Neil Holder would assist Frei 37 seconds later to make it a 2-3 deficit for the Generals heading into the third period.
The Tomahawks would get one more 4:09 into the third, but the Generals would once again make it a one goal game with a goal from Frei 11:03 into the third. The Generals weren’t able to tie the game up, and would suffer their second loss of the season. Nolan Ohmart saved 30 of 34 shots in the loss, and Taylor Fans saved 37 of 40 shots in the win.
The Generals will host the Tri-City Titans this Friday for the Generals 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Prime Med Medical Clinic and Saturday at 7:35 PM at Lane Events Center-Ice.
