Generals Set Record with OT Win

Eugene, OR - The NORPAC Pacific Division leading Eugene Generals (18-3) set a franchise record for consecutive wins (11) Saturday when they defeated the third place Puget Sound Tomahawks (9-11) 6-5 in OT in Bremerton, WA. The previous record for consecutive wins (10) was set twice last season.

The OT win also marked an undefeated record for the Generals on their seven game road swing (the longest road swing this season). The Generals set up the record breaking performance with a 2-0 win over the Tomahawks on Friday.

The Generals have defeated the Tomahawks twice, the Rogue Valley Wranglers (1-18) three times, the Coeur d’Alene Lakers (8-12) three times, the River City Jaguars (9-8) twice and the Tri-City Titans (6-14) once during the streak. The Generals will have a chance to extend their streak and avenge their last loss of the season on Sunday in Eugene at 5:50 PM against the second place Seattle Totems (15-2).

“I am very happy that we were able to walk away from Puget Sound with two wins against a very tough team,” Generals Head Coach Jay Miller stated. “But, I am not happy with the way we played on the weekend. We made too many defensive mistakes that probably should have cost us the game on Saturday, and I didn’t feel we played well defensively on Friday despite the shut out. We will have to play much better if we want to extend our streak against the Totems.”

The star of the game on Friday night for the Generals was goaltender Kevin Aslett. Aslett saved all 36 shots the Tomahawks threw his way en route to the Generals first shutout of the season, and Aslett’s first career Junior shutout. Aslett stole the show, but Blake Bishop scored the game winning goal in the first period, and had an assist on Michael Schlagel’s empty net goal to seal the game. Ian Evans and Eric Watters each had an assist on Bishop’s goal.

Saturday night’s game was the Keith Tessin show, as he scored all five Tomahawks goals. Tessin kept Puget Sound in the game, but in the end he couldn’t keep the Generals from skating off the ice with two points.

Joe Myers led the Generals in points with a goal and two assists, Sean O’Connor scored two goals, Carl Lehtola and Michael Schlagel each had a goal and an assist and Michael Frei had two assists in the contest. Tyler Poulsen, Blake Bishop, Kyler Zimick and John Strahle each had an assist. Neil Holder won the game for the Generals in overtime when he slid the puck through the legs of the Puget Sound goaltender with 53 seconds left to go in the first overtime period.

The game this Sunday at Lane Events Center-Ice at 5:50 PM against the Seattle Totems will be broadcast on GiTV. For more information on upcoming games or GiTV please visit eugenegenerals.com.
