Special Teams Propels Generals Past Tomahawks
Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals (3-1) beat the Puget Sound Tomahawks (1-3) 3-1 tonight at Lane Events Center-Ice. The Generals scored all three goals on the power play tonight, and held the Tomahawks scoreless on eight power play opportunities.
“We came out a little slow tonight, but ten minutes into the game we picked up our game,” Generals Head Coach Jay Miller said after the win. “I’m happy about the win tonight, and it felt good to rebound after our disappointing loss last night. Puget Sound is a tough team, and we have to show up to play every time we play each other.”
The Generals started the scoring in the first period when Eric Watters was able grab a rebound from in front of the net and put it past Glen Gayet with 1:26 left to go in the period. Neil Holder was given the assist on the play.
Holder assisted Michael Schlagel just 1:35 into the second period to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. John Strahle would make it 3-0 when Schlagel and Carl Lehtola assisted his blast from the point with 8:19 left to go in the second.
Puget Sound was able to cut it to a two goal lead 37 seconds into the third when Brandyn Kaufman picked the puck from Schlagel on the penalty kill and slid it under the pads of Kevin Aslett on the breakaway. Aslett was the player of the game for the Generals, however, as he was able to stop 32 of the Tomahawks 33 shots on the night.
The Generals were able to hold the Tomahawks off for the rest of the night, and were able to kill off the final two minutes of the game down two men, while the Tomahawks had pulled their goalie to give them a six on three powerplay.
