Generals Lose Overtime Heartbreaker

Eugene, OR – The Eugene Generals were handed their second loss of the season tonight (6-5) in an overtime stunner against the Puget Sound Tomahawks. The Generals crushed the Tomahawks 10-4 yesterday, but just couldn’t seem to maintain any momentum throughout the game tonight at Lane Events Center-Ice. “We got outworked in the third period and overtime,” Head Coach Robert Freeland stated. “You can’t expect to win the game when you don’t finish strong.”

The Generals put up the first goal of the game 1:00 into the game, and looked to be skating with tremendous confidence. That lead didn’t last, however, as Puget Sound responded one minute later to tie the game. That goal seemed to take the wind out of the Generals sails, and they never seemed to recover.

The momentum was tossed back and forth throughout the second period, and when the whistle blew the Generals lead 4-3. The Tomahawks responded 3:12 into the period, and the game was once again even. Ryan Schank assisted Matt Vasilie with 8:39 left in the third period, and it looked like the Generals had turned the corner. The Generals looked as if they would come away with a win when the Tomahawks pulled their goalie with 1:00 minute left in the third period. The Tomahawks wouldn’t let that happen as Carl Horten and Joakim Cedin assisted Sean Carpenter to tie the game with 0:22 left.

In overtime Carl Horten, the Tomahawks leading scorer, took the puck from end to end and dashed the Generals hopes with one shot. That shot was essentially a four point goal as the Tomahawks cut the Generals lead in the NOR-PAC Western Division to six points. The Eugene Generals will look to turn things around tomorrow when they face the River City Jaguars at 12:30 at Lane Events Center-Ice.
