Eugene Earns Third Win In Thirty-Six Hours
The Eugene Generals picked up their third win in four games at the USPHL Winter Showcase with a 5-3 win over the Beijing Shougang Eagles on Monday evening in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
After suffering a frustrating 2-0 loss to the Springfield Pics in the morning session, the Generals aimed to bounce back against the Eagles and earn their third win in less than thirty-six hours.
It took only 18 seconds for the first goal of the game to be scored as Beijing’s Steven Zhuang teed up a hard wrist shot that snuck through traffic and past Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Eugene responded just under seven minutes later thanks to Alex Clark who scored his team-high fourth goal at the USPHL Winter Showcase to tie the score at 1-1.
Four minutes after Clark's tally, Beijing’s Michael Zheng punched home a well-executed two-on-one opportunity to regain the one-goal advantage, a lead that the Eagles would carry into the intermission.
In the second period, Eugene leveled the score once more thanks to captain Jack Thornton who scored his first goal of the weekend, and the Generals took their first lead of the game five and a half minutes later as Dakota Henn fired a hard wrist shot that ricocheted off of Eagles goaltender Daniel Perepezko’s blocker and over his head before trickling into the net for the go-ahead goal.
Eugene’s lead was short-lived, though, as Beijing’s Michael Zheng scored his second goal of the game less than two minutes later to level the score at 3-3, but the Generals would respond once more at the 14:44 mark when first-year forward Nathan Leach rang a shot off the crossbar and into the net to regain the one-goal advantage for Eugene.
Jack Thornton later added an empty-net goal with just five seconds remaining in regulation to seal a 5-3 win in a thrilling, seesaw game.
Generals goaltender Christopher Alexakis netted his second win in as many starts at the USPHL Winter Showcase stopping 37 of 40 shots faced.
“The guys continued to play with a lot of confidence and brought another solid fifty minutes tonight,” said Generals Head Coach Justin Kern. “They’ve kept working on what our staff has been preaching all week, and the results have shown over the past two days. Our goaltending was solid and our defensemen were superb once more.”
With the win, the Generals move to 3-1-0 through four games at the USPHL Winter Showcase. The Generals wrap up their run in Massachusetts with a Monday morning matchup against the Boston Bandits at 10:30am EST at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
