Player Spotlight- #76 Steven Slattery
by Chris Bilder, Generals Staff Writer
Eugene, OR- Generals Assistant Captain Steven Slattery has 12 points in 9 games with the Generals this season. He is one of only five returning players, and is an emotional leader on the ice. Slattery's gritty play has earned him quite a few penalty minutes, but the intensity he brings to the team is invaluable.
CB: How would you describe your season thus far?
SS: It’s been good. It’s been pretty rough, though. We’ve had lots of injuries. We’ve been getting past them, and coming together as a team really well.
CB: The team just tied the franchise record for most consecutive wins. What can you attribute to the team’s recent success?
SS: We’ve been working together well, supporting each other and getting the job done as a team.
CB: What does the team have to do this weekend to keep the streak going?
SS: Work harder than we ever have. We have to get a few more shots on net, and keep their shot total down to a minimum.
CB: The team is 2-0 on Breast Cancer Awareness Night, but you will be facing arguably the best team you’ve faced for the event. What do you think your chances are of going 3-0 wearing pink jerseys?
SS: Excellent. I think we have to work really hard, and play as a team. If we can do that we will succeed.
CB: The Generals are now tied with the Titans for 2nd in NORPAC, and this weekend could put the Generals in sole possession of second place. After the first three games this season, did you think the team would be in this position?
SS: Yes. It’s going to be a battle for the top teams in the league all season. As long as we play as a team and keep working hard then we can get the job done.
CB: What do you think you bring to the team that nobody else does?
SS: I like to get into people’s heads, and try to get them out of their game.
CB: You’re now second in NORPAC in PIM’s. Do you think you would be as successful on the ice if you didn’t take as many penalties?
SS: I think I need to play with a certain amount of grittiness to have success on the ice. I would like to stay out of the box, but I’m not going to sacrifice the style that has allowed me to be successful on this team.
CB: You have twelve points in nine games this season. What are your personal goals for the rest of the season?
SS: I just want to have fun, win some games and do what I can to make the Generals a better team.
CB: Five of your six assists on the season have come on special teams. What do you attribute that to?
SS: Our sick powerplay.
CB: What are your expectations for the team this season?
SS: I think we’ll be battling for one of the top positions in the league. I want to win our division, but we have to focus on one game at a time.
