Player Spotlight- #3 Trevor Ruiz
by Chris Bilder, Generals Staff Writer

Eugene, OR-

Chris Bilder: You were selected by the Generals out of Main Camp, but weren’t able to immediately join the team. What were your reasons for not joining the Generals out of Main Camp, and why did you decide to come back?

Trevor Ruiz: The reason why I couldn’t come to the Generals out of Main Camp was because of my grades back home, and I screwed up in school. My reason for coming back was that Midget hockey is to try to make the jump to Junior hockey, and I was able to do that. I really liked it out here, and the guys were really cool to me.

CB: How important is your academic success compared to your on-ice success?

TR: Academic success is more important than my success on the ice because in the long run if my hockey career doesn’t work out, my academic career will always be there.

CB: How does it feel to be the youngest member of the Generals?

TR: It feels good. Its tough because everybody is stronger than me, but I’ve learned to deal with it. I kind of enjoy being the youngest guy. Its fun.

CB: What is it like to play against opponents that are five years older than you?

TR: At first its intimidating, but as soon as you have that first shift and you make a good play it calms me down a bit. It doesn’t matter how old you are; it just matters if you can play.

CB: What were you feeling before your first game?

TR: I was feeling really nervous. I was shaking on the bench, and I was almost having a panic attack. I was worries that I would make a mistake, but I was a little better when [Jordan] Blake-Jones calmed me down on the bench.

CB: What has been your favorite moment with the team?

TR: All the teambuilding stuff because that really brings us together. Just hanging out with the guys. I think my favorite moment was eating the habanero. I felt like I was going to die, even though I’m Cuban, but it was well worth it.

CB: You had a crazy hairstyle for about a week. Will we be seeing any more outrageous hair styles from you in the future?

TR: You might be. We’ll see what happens. I guess the team is brainstorming some ideas for later on in the season. Its all fun, and hair grows back right?

CB: You have four points in eight games this season. Have you been satisfied with your point production thus far?

TR: I have been, but I feel I can do more. I feel like I can get more points, but I’m definitely happy with my point production.

CB: What is the one area of your game that you feel benefits the team the most?

TR: My vision definitely helps. I feel like I can see the ice pretty well. I communicate a lot on the ice, which really helps.

CB: What is the one area of your game that you’d like to improve the most?

TR: My quickness and my shot most definitely. I need to get better releases on the point. I’d like to become a better hockey player all around. I’d like to be able to pick corners, and I want to hit like Blake Bishop. I want to be able to go full boar right from the start of the game.
