Jane Detering intesely watches the Generals

Housing Spotlight- Jane Detering
by Chris Bilder, Generals Staff Writer

Eugene, OR- The Eugene Generals faced many difficulties starting the franchise last season. One of the many difficulties the team faced was finding housing for their players. Of the Generals 25 players only 2 were from the state of Oregon. That meant that the Generals had to find places in the community for 23 hockey players. One person that stepped up for the Generals was Jane Detering. Jane lives in Harrisburg, which is about 20 miles outside of Eugene, but was willing to house not one, but two, Generals players.

CB: How was your overall experience being a host parent last season?

JD: I loved having Michael [Frei] and Chris [Orlowsky] in my house last season. They put my mind at rest about a lot of things.

CB: Did you have reservations about hosting before the season?

JD: I had a few reservations about housing players. I wasn’t sure if they would be well behaved or if I would have to be more of a baby sitter. I hadn’t had kids living in my house for quite some time, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

CB: Were you able to teach them anything during their stay?

JD: I did teach Michael how to make hash browns. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but living in Switzerland, he wasn't ever taught how to cook.

CB: What was your favorite moment in the housing experience?

JD: I can’t really say. I had so many great experiences with them that I just can’t narrow it down to one specific moment.

CB: Was there any moment that struck you as particularly funny?

JD: I remember the first day that Michael and Chris came. I showed them to their room, and Michael walked in first. I knew that there were two different bed sizes, but they didn’t. Michael, who is 17, didn’t think twice about making sure he had the largest bed. Chris, who is 20, could have fought him for it, but he just smiled, shook his head, and took the small bed.

CB: So do you have any reservations about housing next season?

JD: I am very comfortable about next season. I wish Chris were coming back, but I can’t wait to see Michael.

CB: What are you looking forward to next season?

JD: I’m really looking forward to seeing all the old players, and meeting the new ones. I hope they go a little bit further and make it to Nationals next season.
